    mechanisms, appropriate skin and hair type combinations, and effectiveness
    profiles. Understanding the differences helps set realistic expectations and make
    better decisions about treatment.

    The Main Technologies

    tones, the most commonly used technology), Alexandrite lasers (fastest repetition
    rate, best for lighter skin tones with dark hair), Nd:YAG lasers (the safest option for
    darker skin tones due to reduced melanin absorption), and Intense Pulsed Light
    (IPL) which, despite being commonly grouped with laser treatments, uses a different
    technology — a broad-spectrum light source rather than a focused laser beam.

    The American Academy of Dermatology provides patient guidance on laser hair
    removal that includes information on what to expect across different skin and hair
    type combinations, how many sessions are typically required, and what differentiates
    laser from other hair removal methods.

    Why Multiple Sessions Are Required

    Hair grows in cycles — actively growing (anagen), transitional (catagen), and resting
    (telogen) phases. Laser treatment is only effective during the anagen phase when
    the hair is actively connected to the follicle. Because hair at any given location cycles
    asynchronously, multiple sessions timed to catch different hairs in their growth phase
    are required to achieve significant reduction.

    Skin and Hair Type Matching

    Laser hair removal efficacy depends on the contrast between hair pigment and skin
    pigment — the laser targets melanin in the hair follicle, and treatments work best
    when the hair is significantly darker than the surrounding skin. This is why very light
    hair (blonde, red, white) doesn’t respond well to most laser technologies, and why
    certain devices are better suited to certain skin tone ranges.
